Staying safe on UMDate
Your safety matters. UMDate connects you with other U of M students, but you should still take care. Here's how.
Before you meet
- Chat within UMDate first — get to know someone before sharing personal contact details.
- Video or voice chat before meeting in person.
- Be cautious of anyone who avoids questions, won't video chat, or seems too good to be true.
Meeting in person
- Always meet in a public place — a campus café, the library, or another busy spot.
- Tell a friend where you're going and who you're meeting.
- Arrange your own transportation, and stay aware of your surroundings.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave.
Protect yourself online
- Never send money or financial information to anyone you meet here.
- Be wary of anyone who quickly professes strong feelings or asks for help with money — these are common scam tactics.
- Keep personal details (home address, daily schedule, financial info) private until you genuinely trust someone.
Reporting & blocking
If someone makes you uncomfortable, open any chat, tap the ⋯ menu, and choose Report or Block. Blocking removes your match and hides you from each other. Reports go to our team for review.
In an emergency
If you're in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (911). On campus, you can reach University of Manitoba Security Services. Your safety always comes first.
